Definition of Educational/Instructional Technology

Buffalo State Glossary (n.d.) mentions that “Educational technology includes all components of informational technology used in the delivery of educational materials.”

Glossary of Teaching Terms (n.d.) states that “Educational Development is the process of improving the effectiveness of educational provision through an ongoing review of relevant factors at all levels from teaching techniques and materials to institutional structures and policies, and the provision of mechanisms for progressive change.”

Seels and Richey (1994) gave the different meanings of educational and instructional technology. “Educational technology is the combination of instructional, learning, development, managerial, and other technologies as applied to the solution of educational problems” (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 8). “Instructional technology is the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management and evaluation of processes and resources for learning” (Seels & Richey, 1994, p. 9).

Wikipedia (2006, para 1) gives the definition of educational technology that “Educational technology is the systematic and creative blending of "idea" and "product" technologies with subject-matter content in order to engender and improve teaching and learning processes. Educational technology is often associated with the terms instructional technology
or learning technology.”

As I understand it, educational technology is the integration of technology for applying and developing in the fields of teaching and learning to improve on the effectiveness of instruction.

Good work C. K.! What can you imply from these multiple definitions of the field?

Dr. Wickersham,

I think different classes different instructors need different educational technology. The instructor who would like to use technology should be the one who picks what technology they prefer. These definitions are telling me that educational technology is an option to help instructions better and more convenient.
